If you are like me, you want what’s under your bedspread to be as pretty as the bedspread itself. Unfortunately, decorative sheets can be costly. Often it is also difficult to find just the look you are after, or you just like using your own creative juices! if you are fortunate to be able to buy extra wide percale sheeting, you can make a set of sheets in just a few easy steps.
Making flat sheets is simply a matter of measuring the size you want and cutting your extra wide percale that size. Usually, three yards is enough for a queen size sheet. Now, you can decide how you want to embellish your sheet. It’s fun to choose a coordinating fabric and sew about a three inch band to the top of your sheet before hemming. You may also want to add a third fabric in a narrow strip between the band and the sheet body as a highlight. Finish the top of your pillowcases in the same manner.
Fitted sheets are not as difficult as you might imagine. Simply measure your mattress from side to side and top to bottom including the sides. Now add two and a half inches to each measurement for hems. At each corner, cut out a square measuring the depth of your mattress plus one and one fourth inch. With right sides together, sew these two cut edges of each square together forming a pocket. Hem all the way around inserting elastic around each pocket.
Experiment with different trims. you can use cottons, taffetas or a variety as you wish. Sweet dreams!
