Rocking Chair

Good evening.  We are going to be moving on to the next step with the rocking chair.  We are now working on the cushion.  The cushion was very old as it not only had the cotton batting but straw as well.  We left the cushion as is but added some new cotton batting and wrapped it around the straw and old batting.  Be careful that you do not increase the size as it still needs to be able to fit in its designated space of the rocking chair.  We wrapped only once just to give it a little extra plush and made sure it was quite snug.

Once you have done this, you can move on to cutting your piece of new upholstery fabric.  Ours was old and tore very easily.  To make sure that we had enough, we cut the new upholstery fabric at least 1 1/2 inches extra around the old piece.  Don't worry if it looks like it could be too much.  Remember you have added a little extra batting and will need that for the height of the seat.  You can always trim off if you have excess but you cannot put it back on.

If you have a patterned upholstery and you want your design to be a certain way, remember to make sure you cut that out right.  Take your time as you don't want to make a mistake and have to start all over.  In-Weave in Hawarden, Iowa, carries a huge selection of upholstery.  Be sure to check them out if you are planning on doing some upholstery projects.  On Monday, we will discuss how to put it all together.  Have a great weekend.
